A new $21 million grant from the NIH's Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative will allow Department of Neurobiology and Physics Professor David Kleinfeld and a team of researchers to continue studying the coordination of multiple sensory inputs and head movements. The BRAIN Initiative supports scientific research that will uncover a new, dynamic picture of the brain showing how individual cells and complex neural circuits interact in time and space.
The Department of Neurobiology distinguished professor was recognized for contributions to understanding mechanisms that underlie formation and function of the nervous system.
The latest Clarivate list of most influential scientists in their fields includes School of Biological Science's Ananda Goldrath (immunology), Julian Schroeder (plant and animal science) and Yunde Zhao (plant and animal science).
The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group has selected UC San Diego to receive a four-year, $10 million grant to establish the Allen Discovery Center for Neurobiology in Changing Environments. The center, which will include Matthew Lovett-Barron and Diana Rennison from the School of Biological Sciences, will take a multidisciplinary approach to investigating how climate change may impact the nervous systems and behavior of marine animals.
Plants widen microscopic pores on their leaves in response to heat, but scientists lacked an understanding of the mechanisms behind this “sweating” function. Now, biologists have unlocked the details behind these processes and identified two paths that plants use to handle rising temperatures.
A group of UC San Diego researchers and staff gathered for a Research Communications Program and Office of Research and Innovation workshop designed to help researchers increase funding for their work and field of study..
Congratulations to Associate Professor Alisa Huffaker on being named the Maarten J. Chrispeels Chancellor’s Endowed Chair in Plant Biology. Huffaker studies signal transduction regulating plant innate immunity.
Research led by graduate students Fabian Lim and Matthew Maxwell has been recognized with 2024-2025 Biological Sciences Founding Faculty Awards for Graduate Excellence.
For most, spending nine months tracking elephants through Sri Lankan landscapes, monitoring their interactions with humans and documenting their behavior sounds like a wildlife lover’s dream. For BioSci graduate student Sateesh Venkatesh, this is reality. Venkatesh has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright-National Geographic Award to research the complex, critical — and sometimes deadly — relationship between farmers and elephants.
The Eureka! Summer Research Scholarship at the School of Biological Sciences provides scholarship funding to outstanding students who work full-time in a research lab over the summer. With the goal of supporting these students – who represent the next generation of industry leaders – biotechnology company Revvity recently established the Revvity Access STEM Scholarship Endowment through the Eureka! Scholars program.
