Career Treks

Explore Where Science Happens. Discover Where You Belong.

Career Treks give UC San Diego BioSci undergraduate and graduate students an inside look at career opportunities in science and technology through exclusive onsite visits at leading companies across San Diego.

Designed to help you take the next step toward your career goals, Career Treks provide the opportunity to explore potential career paths, learn what companies look for when hiring, discover internship and job opportunities, and build connections with professionals who can help you get there.

Check back in late summer for the Fall 2026 Career Trek schedule, including participating companies and registration details. In the meantime, review the Career Trek expectations below to prepare for a meaningful experience and make the most of every opportunity to connect with industry and build your career.

What to Expect

Registration

Registration for Fall 2026 Career Treks opens on this webpage on Monday, Sept. 21. Spots are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis based on company capacity (typically around 30 students per visit), so register early to secure your place. You will be notified if you are selected or placed on a waitlist. Students may register for multiple Career Treks but may attend only one per quarter. If selected for more than one, you must decline additional offers so other students have the opportunity to participate.

Preparation

Career Treks are an opportunity to make connections and make a lasting impression. Wear pants and closed-toe shoes with heels no higher than one inch, and choose business casual or business professional attire to represent yourself professionally. Research the company and panelists ahead of time, review LinkedIn profiles, and prepare thoughtful questions about their careers, the organization, and potential opportunities. Bring a notebook, take notes, engage during discussions, and have your elevator pitch ready for networking conversations.

Agenda

Held most Fridays throughout the academic year, Career Treks are approximately three-hour onsite company visits designed to help students explore career pathways and connect with industry professionals. Each Trek typically includes a tour of company labs and facilities, an employee panel featuring professionals across roles and career stages, a presentation on internship and job opportunities, and a hosted networking lunch with industry experts.

Transportation

Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from Career Treks. Carpooling or ridesharing is encouraged, and participating students will receive an email with an optional opportunity to coordinate transportation with fellow attendees. Before the Trek, students should research the company location, estimate travel time, account for traffic and parking, and plan accordingly to arrive on time.
